The Lotus

Original story

Message of Healing

Healing to me means, accepting what has past, accepting what is and accepting that the only person who can change things is me by my way of thinking, not blaming myself, not believing negative harmful thoughts, and not allowing myself to give energy to something in the past. It is a journey, and I don’t believe the effects ever fully go but are apart of the body and mind but with doing the difficult thing and talking to someone trusted, leading everyday with a kind heart and a fighting spirit to create a life that feels worth living. The depression, anxiety, fear still lives on but the fighting spirit to create change, the meaningful caring words of another person, the feeling of taking a breath and feeling safe, is brighter than the darkness. There are lots of people in the world for a reason and people suffer… if I can every day through simple actions like a smile, a kind thought, time and patience, being available to someone else can change the course of someone’s day or life. I know now through receiving support, how much of a difference that makes and how it slowly builds self worth, a healthier perspective and a sense of safety. It’s a stepping stone to another stone, no matter how slow or daunting it is, it’s progress to the other side.

A poem to share a message of hope and how hope can lead to change and a brighter days. The Lotus. The lotus lies beneath the murky water,  Unmoved by the shadows of creatures passing by,  It rests below patiently to reach the light.  The flow of water, the mud and sand, nothing stops it growing, for it is part of the land.  The ripples, the waves, the water flow,           Makes the lotus stronger the further up it goes.  Somehow it knows, it has a place to be,                   It continues growing through the dense water it sees.  Reaching high, a delicate sigh, it begins to wake from the night.  Unfolding its soft petals, clean as a medal,  Rising up, reaching out, claiming the space, meant to be. Later when the moonlight shines upon the land, the lotus closes its petals to go inland, away from the surface, back to the depths, replenishing itself knowing. Despite all odds, all unknowing, it will make its way to the sunlight, in the morning.

Grounding activity

Find a comfortable place to sit. Gently close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths - in through your nose (count to 3), out through your mouth (count of 3). Now open your eyes and look around you. Name the following out loud:

5 – things you can see (you can look within the room and out of the window)

4 – things you can feel (what is in front of you that you can touch?)

3 – things you can hear

2 – things you can smell

1 – thing you like about yourself.

Take a deep breath to end.

From where you are sitting, look around for things that have a texture or are nice or interesting to look at.

Hold an object in your hand and bring your full focus to it. Look at where shadows fall on parts of it or maybe where there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers (This can also be done with a pet if you have one).

Take a deep breath to end.

Ask yourself the following questions and answer them out loud:

1. Where am I?

2. What day of the week is today?

3. What is today’s date?

4. What is the current month?

5. What is the current year?

6. How old am I?

7. What season is it?

Take a deep breath to end.

Put your right hand palm down on your left shoulder. Put your left hand palm down on your right shoulder. Choose a sentence that will strengthen you. For example: “I am powerful.” Say the sentence out loud first and pat your right hand on your left shoulder, then your left hand on your right shoulder.

Alternate the patting. Do ten pats altogether, five on each side, each time repeating your sentences aloud.

Take a deep breath to end.

Cross your arms in front of you and draw them towards your chest. With your right hand, hold your left upper arm. With your left hand, hold your right upper arm. Squeeze gently, and pull your arms inwards. Hold the squeeze for a little while, finding the right amount of squeeze for you in this moment. Hold the tension and release. Then squeeze for a little while again and release. Stay like that for a moment.

Take a deep breath to end.
